Evanston is one of the most architecturally varied cities on the North Shore. The blocks east of Ridge are full of historic Victorians, American Foursquares, and gracious 1920s Colonials. West of Asbury you'll find mid-century ranches and post-war Cape Cods. South of Dempster, century-old workers' cottages have been gut-renovated alongside new construction. Each style brings its own kitchen-renovation challenges, and our crews have worked on all of them.
Most Evanston kitchen renovations we run fall into one of three categories. The first is opening up a closed-off kitchen in a historic home — typically removing the wall between the original kitchen and the dining room or pantry to create a single open space. This usually involves a structural beam to carry the load, plus careful work to preserve original trim, plaster, and hardwood floors elsewhere in the home. The second category is replacing a 1990s or early-2000s kitchen with cabinetry, counters, and appliances that match how the family actually cooks today. The third is a full gut renovation — new layout, new plumbing, new electrical, new windows, and a complete appliance package.
Whichever category your project falls into, our process is the same. We come out to your home for a free in-home consultation, measure the space, look at how you actually use the kitchen, and discuss what is and isn't working. Within seven days you receive a written line-item estimate covering demolition, structural work, plumbing, electrical, cabinets, counters, tile, appliances, lighting, paint, and final cleanup.
What our Evanston kitchen remodels typically include:
Evanston has a thoughtful permit process and active building department. We pull every required permit through the City of Evanston and schedule the inspections at every required milestone — rough plumbing, rough electrical, framing, insulation, and final. Our crews are familiar with the local building department's expectations, the contractor parking rules in residential blocks, and the noise ordinances that apply to weekday work.
Pricing for an Evanston kitchen remodel varies widely. A clean refresh — new cabinets, counters, appliances, no layout changes — typically runs $55,000 to $95,000. A full gut renovation with custom cabinetry, stone counters, panel-ready appliances, and structural work runs $95,000 to $200,000. High-end primary kitchens in larger Evanston homes with full Sub-Zero/Wolf packages and custom millwork can run $200,000 to $400,000+.
Most full Evanston kitchen renovations take eight to twelve weeks once cabinetry is ordered and on the way. Cabinetry lead times are typically the gating factor — semi-custom cabinets ship in six to eight weeks, fully custom can run twelve to sixteen weeks. We coordinate the schedule so demo and rough work can begin while cabinets are being built.
If you live in Evanston and you are thinking about a kitchen renovation, we would love to come walk through the space with you. There is no pressure and no sales pitch — just an honest conversation about your kitchen, a realistic budget range, and a clear path forward.
Recently Completed
Last spring we completed a full kitchen renovation in a 1920s American Foursquare on Hartzell Street in north Evanston. The original kitchen was small, dark, and walled off from the dining room — typical of homes from that era. The owners wanted to open the space up without losing the home's historic character.
We removed the wall between the kitchen and the original butler's pantry, installed an LVL beam to carry the load, and reconfigured the layout to fit a 9-foot center island with seating for four. The cabinetry is inset Shaker-style in painted white with brass hardware. Counters are honed Calacatta marble with a full-height slab backsplash behind the 36-inch Wolf range. We added a panel-ready Sub-Zero refrigerator, integrated Miele dishwasher, and a beverage center in the island.
The original hardwood floors throughout the first floor were repaired where the wall came out and refinished to match. The full project took ten weeks including City of Evanston permit and inspections. The owners told us the kitchen now feels like the heart of the home — exactly what they wanted.
